All Black Everything: Cartier Santos De Cartier with black ADLC coating

The Cartier Santos is often referred to as the world’s first pilot’s watch. It was initially developed by Cartier in 1904 for the Brazilian Alberto Santos-Dumont, who was a true pioneer in aviation back in his days.

The Santos de Cartier collection was being reinvented in 2018 and has become a real crowd pleaser ever since, not least thanks to some smart inventions by Cartier, such as the QuickSwitch and SmartLink mechanisms. That blackened watches are on everyone’s lips right now is also something we have known since our last article.

The combination of both must therefore be a no-brainer.

Tried and tested design, now in black

A completely blackened version of the watch was now presented on the occasion of the Watches & Wonders 2020 watch fair. The case owes its black appearance to a so-called ADLC coating, which is, simply put, a carbon-based layer that is only a few micrometers thick. This protects the surface of the case from excessive wear, which in turn extends the life of the watch.

What at first glance looks like a black stainless steel bracelet on the left watch, is in reality a rubber strap. If you like your watch a tad more on the elegant side, there is also the option of an alligator leather strap. Other than that, same old, same old: We already know the caliber 1847 MC from the 2018 references and also the case dimensions are the ones of the larger Santos de Cartier models from 2018.
