Roger Dubuis does not do things by halves. Consistency in material and design is the order of the day here. The Excalibur Twofold brings this philosophy to the top: titanium or carbon fibre? Kids’ stuff. A so-called “Mineral Composite Fiber” has been specially developed here, a first for Haute Horlogerie, the exclusive art of watchmaking.
But what is this MCF material actually? It is a thin layer of quartz that is glued with epoxy resin to form the case, similar to carbon fiber. Roger Dubuis had to study science materials in depth, as there was no suitable epoxy on the market. In order to maintain the extremely white look for years, a new formula was needed so that the epoxy resin would not only fulfil its purpose, but would also be light-resistant, for example, and not yellow at some point, as was previously the case with computers. This has been obviously achieved, as the watch boats an extremely bright white.
But that’s not all – the next construction site has to apply the luminous material: The Super-LumiNova used must be applied to a limited area, a “tub” so to speak, so that it does not flow away. Here too, they sat down and brought in external partners to find a solution to decorate the edges of the watch’s inner workings without the material running away. Of course, we would love to know how that worked out, but understandably the process is a closely guarded secret.
However, as you may have seen in this picture, this is not the end of the innovations. Roger Dubuis did not miss the opportunity to melt luminous material (specifically the new LumiSuperBiwiNova™) into the rubber strap itself, so it too will glow in the dark. It can also be said that the watch cannot be overlooked in any situation in life, all thanks to its diameter of 45mm.
This all sounds like a lot of work to undertake, so it can be quite surprising to learn that only 8 pieces of this watch were produced, which of course are only available exclusively at Roger Dubuis boutiques. We can only speculate about the price, but I find it hard to imagine anything under a hundred thousand Euro.
