Hublot Spirit of Big Bang Meca-10

Hublot is by now not just flashy marketing. This could already be seen in 2016, with the release of the Big Bang Meca-10 in all of its diverse forms – the first watch to utilize the in-house HUB1201 movement with its 10 day power reserve.  Now Hublot has endowed a tonneau-shaped Spirit of Big Bang with these same innards, and thus presents the next watch in the line, which also proves to be much more than a loud accessory.

The Spirit of Big Bang Meca-10 is an exciting new iteration of the Meca-10 series, based on a movement which continues the characteristic Hublot Industrial Design – with all the brutality that entails.  The HUB1201 was already convincing in the round case with its extreme skeletonization, including steel girder-like bridges with large holes offering a view of the two large barrels, which together allow for 10 days of power reserve and eliminate the need for an automatic rotor.

Hublot didn’t just transplant the round movement into a tonneau-shaped case, though. Rather, they took all the time they needed to design the HUB1233, rearranging components as they saw fit.  One example is the power reserve mechanism, which utilizes a highly interesting and probably unnecessarily complex pinion rack – but the results speak for themselves.  The shape of the case contributes to the surprisingly high degree of wearability for a watch with a diameter of 45mm, especially in the pleasantly light titanium version.

Hublot just wouldn’t be Hublot if they didn’t offer the full complement of modern materials: in addition to the titanium version for 22,700 €, you can also choose King Gold, a proprietary 18-carat red gold alloy, for the princely sum of 43,500 €, or the almost unobtrusive and assumedly most durable Black Magic, a sandblasted ceramic, for a mere 26,900 €.
