Everyone knows Switzerland, Germany, and Japan as the watch hotspots of the world. But beware of drawing the false reverse conclusion that other countries do not produce remarkable timepieces. As so often in life it is well worth it to wander off the beaten path.
True to the expression “different countries, different customs” brands of various states strive to imprint their national spirit on their creations. A first-rate example in typical Scandinavian style is Richardt & Mejer. Over decades, Scandinavian design was primarily at home in living rooms all over the world, but the young Danish brand applies this wonderful design concept very successfully to contemporary watches.
The company is a young, Danish team of watch enthusiasts, who have been realizing their personal dream in watchmaking since 2015. The timepieces – all designed in the Copenhagen Design Studio – come in many different shapes and colors. A wide variety of choices caters to each and every Richardt & Mejer devotee.
Of particular interest is the case form of the Signature watch, as it is a genuine innovation among the usual sameness of horological form. At first glance, the shape of the brushed stainless-steel case reminds of a Tonneau case which has been stretched in length. With a contemporary case diameter of 38 mm and a height of only 9 mm, the timekeeper pleasantly hugs the wrist and easily slips under any shirt cuff. The extended strap lugs lend the watch more prominence than the mere diameter suggests and greatly invigorate the modern appearance of the watch. The compact dimensions ensure supreme comfort. The watches are equipped with high-precision Swiss Ronda quartz calibers.
The latest highlight in the Danes’ coffers is the Automatisk collection, which at first sight appears very similar to the Signature Collection in style, but hides a significantly evolved inner life. The use of the automatic caliber STP 1-11 lets the hearts of mechanical watch lovers jump. The Swiss quality work of Swiss Technology Production is similar to the tried and true ETA 2824 and impresses with its legendary reliability and precision. With 28,800 vibrations per hour, the second-hand slides effortlessly over the dial. The flat caliber allows for a case height of only 11 mm, which qualifies the Automatisk watches as true dress watches. It is available in three different colors (moss, stone, and plum) and two high-quality cowhide leather straps with efficient quick release spring bars, allowing for a swift strap change.
Those who are not enthused by the sharp-edged Tonneau case will find joy in the “Daily Watch”, which is the little brother of the Automatisk watch in the truest sense of the word. The circular 37 mm case takes up significantly less space on the wrist. The style strays a bit from its Danish heritage. The dial with its reduced, organized look immediately radiates Bauhaus vibes. Overall, the Daily Watch with the narrower bandwidth and reduced height is a step ahead of its big brother in terms of noblesse and elegance.
Each timepiece is shipped in a refined wooden watch box. The precision Swiss movements, the scratch-resistant Sapphire Crystal, and the refreshing design with Scandinavian DNA make the watches by Richardt & Mejer ideal everyday watches, which leave nothing to wish for.
