Grand Seiko is taking their 60th anniversary as an opportunity to launch a series of limited edition watches. In Japan the number 60 stands for new energy and rebirth, and so the watches should not only celebrate the past 60 years, but also herald in a new era for Grand Seiko. All four new releases have a blue dial, with each one embodying a different aspect of Grand Seiko’s watchmaking art and expertise.
The first watch in the collection pays homage to the reference 44GS from 1967, which laid the foundation for the Japanese Grand Seiko style that exists to this day. Equipped with the Hi-Beat caliber 9S85, the watch has a maximum deviation of +5 to -3 seconds per day and a 55 hour power reserve. The Hi-Beat Limited Edition is limited to 1,500 pieces and will be released in February.
60 years is a diamond anniversary, and so the bezel of the Women’s Automatic is embellished with 45 diamonds. More gemstones, set on the mother-of-pearl dial, act as hour markers. As a caliber, the 9S27 does its job with a 50 hour power reserve and a deviation of +8 to -3 seconds per day. 300 copies of the Women’s Automatic Limited Edition will be available starting February.
Grand Seiko is also launching a new quartz movement for the anniversary, a 9F85 caliber which only deviates 5 seconds a year. A 5-pointed star, representing the movement’s impressive accuracy, is proudly displayed on the dial, which also has a 2020 pattern to remind the wearer of the anniversary year. 2,500 copies of the Quartz Limited Edition will be produced, and will be available starting in March.
A second quartz-powered watch, belonging to the Sport Collection will also be offered as a part of Grand Seiko’s anniversary celebration, its blue dial beautifully complemented by a ceramic bezel of the same color. The caliber 9F85 ticks here as well, and the watch is water resistant to 20 bar. 2,000 copies will be available in April. You can find more information here.
