Fans of the typical Bauhaus design, with its clear and straight-forward design that always follows function, are surely unable to think of artist and designer Max Bill without thinking of Junghans. At least since 1956, the year in which the cooperation between manufacturer and designer began. Junghans’ driving force is the max bill series, with its simple, consistent forms. In 2019 already existed a limited edition set to celebrate this fruitful decades-long collaboration; back then it was a wristwatch alongside a table clock. This year we are looking at two watches only.
This year’s design was inspired by variation 5 from Max Bill’s graphic series quinzevariations sur un même thème, which developed 15 different variations from a basic geotremic scheme. This time the set consists of two wristwatches: a Chronoscope with a 40mm diameter and a Small Automatic with a 34mm diameter. Both watches are completely matt black coated, only the indexes, numbers, hands and of course the lettering are snow white, which provides a very high contrast and best readability. Just as the original inventor intended.
In size and appearance, the Chronoscope is a modern-day max bill, however unique aspect of this set is certainly the second watch: 34mm is exactly the size of the original max bill from 1961, and a distinctly non-modern size. This makes us question whether watches really have to be this large nowadays.
Both watches come on snow-white calfskin straps. Those who prefer something more discreet instead of this contrasting look are covered as well, as the set also includes black calfskin straps for a monochromatic look. Thanks to the quick release straps, you can also change the straps yourself within a matter of seconds, depending on your mood and occasion.
The 222 sets with the reference 027/4018.02 will be available in late summer for a price of € 2,995. For those interested, more details can be found on the Junghans website.
