D1 Milano – When every second counts

If it wasn’t for the global fashion epicenter, northern Italy’s Lombardy would probably be much more of a laid-back region. When Milan hosts the renowned fashion show once a year and attracts tens of thousands of fashion enthusiasts, who gladly make the pilgrimage, the city is temporarily turned upside down. Some years ago, one brand took advantage of this hustle and bustle and celebrated its premiere. However, with one major difference: Their goal was to be seen on the wrists of the world, less on its catwalks.

In the country of sprezzatura, a decent watch is common courtesy. At least that’s what Dario Spallone thought back in 2013 when he laid the foundation stone for D1 Milano during the Milan Fashion Show. The goal he set himself was to capture the essence of Italian lifestyle in a watch, while establishing the watch as such as a stylish fashion accessory and less as a new status symbol.

Speaking of which, this is a point that sets D1 Milano apart from many other young watch brands: The brand does not pretend to be something it is clearly not. Instead, the young Italian team behind D1 Milano concentrates on what it is best at: Making stylish watches accessible to the masses.

Word spread fast. Not only did Forbes reward the young brand with a place in the “The 10 Startups Redefining Italian Fashion” list. No, also well over 750 multi-brand stores have already included the brand in their offer, including heavyweights such as La Rinascente, Galeries Lafayette and Harvey Nichols GCC. International expansion is being further accelerated by several own boutiques overseas.

The sporty-elegant watches are reminiscent of the great Gérald Genta, whose horological designs left an unparalleled impact on the watch world. The idea is well received, because no matter whether it’s on the wrist of NBA Basketball player Danilo Gallinari or on stage with singer Nicole Scherzinger, the watches enjoy huge popularity.

The collections at a glance:

Polycarbon:
The undisputed bestseller collection: With an 8.80 mm flat case, black luminous hands and a case crafted out of Polycarbon, this watch is sure to make a good impression on any wrist.

Ultra Thin Classic:
Brushed stainless-steel, only 6mm flat and available in a 38 or 40 mm diameter: The Ultra Thin Classic is a tool watch for all occasions.

Ultra Thin Classic Bracelet:
If you are a fan of the Ultra Thin Classic collection, but prefer the heft of a solid stainless-steel bracelet, this is your go-to collection.

Mechanical:
How about an automatic watch? If you like it a tad more sophisticated, this collection is for you. It comes with a Japanese automatic movement, the option of a skeleton dial and on a rubber or stainless-steel bracelet for a secure grip.

Chronographs

With its new line of chronographs, D1 Milano now took a new path after more than 5 years of existence. What is cool is the flyback chronograph complication, which is realized via a Meca quartz caliber (essentially a quartz-mechanical hybrid). While the normal time tracking is controlled by the quartz movement, the caliber’s mechanical part is in charge of the chronograph function. Quartz accuracy meets mechanical charm.

Everything is securely stowed under a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and in a 41.5 mm case. With a height of only 11 mm, the new chronograph collection has contemporary dimensions. In particular the low construction height makes the watch a subtle accessory that quickly disappears under the shirt cuff, if desired.

The watches come with a brushed finished, i.e. both the bracelet and the top of the bezel are matt. Only the transition between the two elements is polished, providing the watch with a fairly tool-ish character.

The new D1 Milano Chronographs come in three versions: Silver (CHBJ03), Blue (CHBJ02) and Black (CHBJ01).

Conclusion

D1 Milano is not just another watch brand. The brand stands for a lifestyle, la bella vita and stylish watches with tons of attention to detail. All of this is in keeping with the Italian heritage, a heritage to which the brains behind D1 Milano are rightly proud of.
