MAEN watches – An Exciting and Interesting New Manufacturer from the North

Inspired by New Amsterdam, made in Switzerland

Today we will shine a spotlight on an interesting new watch manufacturer hailing from the northern territory of Sweden, however, their story actually begins elsewhere… New Amsterdam to be exact. That’s right – New Amsterdam, or New York, as it is better known today. NY, with its charm and vibrancy, is the city that acted as a source of inspiration for the two Dutchmen that brought the brand MAEN and its fine timepieces to life. The two have always been fascinated by the story of New York City, one which carries many Dutch traits.

This passion is also present in the names of each of their lines: Greenwich, DC-4 Skymaster, Hudson, Brooklyn and Manhattan, all reveal a piece of Dutch history connected to NY. All names, even when at times readapted into English (see Greenwijk becoming Greenwich), are derived from the Dutch language.

Design Meets Functionality

The intention of the two creators was simple: bring to the market timepieces that stand for quality, attention to detail and suit the modern man in a fast-changing world. This is exactly what impressed us here: the elegant line and the perfect combination of functions and design that every MAEN timekeeper possesses.
The high quality of their timepieces, a non-negotiable point for the two founders, is reflected in two things: first, the high-end components and second, the SWISS-made seal. Particular care is put into the testing of each watch, which is also carried out in Switzerland, ensuring that each movement stays precise and each case is made to resist water and shocks

High-end manufacturing for MAEN

The MAEN Collection

The complete MAEN collection includes five lines. Three of them feature automatic movements and two a quartz movement. As much as we love all timepieces out there, those who follow us know that we live for mechanical watches. The three, namely the Greenwich, the Skymaster, and the Hudson, all aim to reach a different demographic.

Meet the the Greenwich 38 GMT, the Skymaster 38 and the Hudson 38

The Greenwich 38 GMT

The Greenwich 38 is the GMT of the three, and the one that will appeal to travelers. On this timepiece, it is the dial that stands out, with its clear legibility. The Superluminova indexes make it a beauty to watch in the dark. The watch carries a SwissTech S24-045 Swiss Made Automatic Movement, with 28 Jewels and a power reserve of about 40 hours. The watch also boasts a sapphire crystal and a water resistance of 10 ATM. It comes in four versions, each one with a rubber strap.

The Greenwich 38 GMT. The name Greenwich leads back to the year 1670 when a Dutchman moved from his village Greenwijck (Pine District) on Long Island to Manhattan, purchased a plot of land and gave it a familiar name. Eventually Greenwijck became Greenwich.

The Skymaster 38

The Skymaster 38 is instead the Chronograph, and a nifty vintage-looking one at that. The 38mm case is, in our opinion, what makes it truly special. Not only are Chronographs in this size rare, but they are also much more challenging to manufacture. The Skymaster houses the Swiss Made ETA 2894-2 Automatic movement with 37 Jewels and a 48-hour power reserve. Furthermore, it is equipped with a 12H GMT bi-directional bezel to keep track of a second time zone. The timepiece comes in five versions and MAEN also allows for a choice of glass, between hesalite and sapphire, and of strap among steel bracelet, leather, or rubber.

The Chronograph Skymaster 38, a tribute to the first flight from Amsterdam to New York by KLM and is named after the aircraft used, the Douglas DC-4 Skymaster.

The Hudson 38

Last but not least, the Hudson 38, the diver watch of the group. This houses the Ronda R- 150 Swiss Made Automatic Movement, with a 40-hour power reserve and 25 Jewels. Its water resistance of up to 20 ATM, rotating bezel, and Superluminova indexes as well as minute and hour-hands make it a robust and versatile timekeeper. Each of the four available versions comes equipped with a steel bracelet, and MAEN also offers rubber (choose from two options) and a NATO strap.

The Diver’s watch Hudson 38, named after the captain Hudson, who aboard the Dutch ship “Halve Maen” first discovered the island of Manhattan, then named New Amsterdam.
