Milus Archimèdes Wild Green: A new green diver from Biel

We have already covered Milus in more detail the course of our Meet the Manufacturer visit article. The independent watch brand from Biel, which has been in existence since 1919, is currently well positioned in the market with three perfectly balanced collections: The product catalog consists of tool watches with aviation history (Snow Star), elegant three-handers (LAB 01) and rugged dive watches (Archimèdes).

The latter are now also available in a new color and thus appeal to an even larger community of diving watch fans. We will show you what you need to know about the wild green novelty.

The original Archimèdes

But first, a brief digression into the Milus history: The current Archimèdes models are essentially the refined, 21st century version of already existing Milus watches. Especially the Reference 666 from the 1960s and the Super Compressor models from the 1970s paved the way, as the following comparison illustrates.

Milus Super Compressor
A Super Compressor model from the 70s (l.) next to the current Archimèdes.

The Super Compressor cases at that time came from the Swiss case manufacturer Ervin Piquerez S.A. (EPSA), which already filed for the patents needed at the end of the 1950s. Besides Milus, brands such as Jaeger-LeCoultre, Longines and Blancpain were also among the largest customers, explaining why many vintage diving watches from this era feature comparable design cues.

Because green is the new blue

The highlight of the newly presented watch is undoubtedly the deep green dial, which was previously only available in black and blue. Considering Milus’ claim to create an adventure diver’s watch for all circumstances, this is definitely a logical step, which we very much welcome.

The other design elements that we already know from the first Archimèdes models are the internal rotating bezel, the helium escape valve as well as the uncluttered and highly legible dial with plenty of SuperLuminova.

Upon closer inspection, you can see that smaller details have actually been taken from the 70s original, most notably the characteristic “broad arrow” hour hand, the indices and the date window. New, however, is the lollipop second hand.

Tried-and-tested technology

Inside the new wild green Archimèdes, Milus relies on the world-renowned ETA 2892A2 movement, a highly solid and precise automatic caliber that is also used by many brands with watch prices above the €5,000 mark.

Although “hidden” under a stainless steel case back, Milus spared no expense to give it a great finish. In particular, the hand-applied circular perlage, the blued screws and the engraved rotor are typical features only to be found in high-quality mechanical watches.
