Up for Pre-Order: Tissot PRX Powermatic 80

Just one month has passed since the launch of the new Tissot PRX (read all about it here). With this re-issue of a Tissot watch from the 1970s, the brand has hit a real bull’s eye, as Tissot watches have rarely been in such high demand in the past as is currently the case with the PRX.

The quartz watch combines stylish design elements of the original PRX from 1978, especially the integrated lugs and the tonneau-shaped case, with a more than fair price. However, the quartz movement was a drawback for many people. This is about to change with the new PRX Powermatic 80.

Tissot PRX Powermatic 80: Proven mechanics with 80h power reserve

Like the quartz version, the new PRX Powermatic 80 will be available in three dial colors: blue, black and silver. The latter features a golden PVD-coated bezel as well as golden indices and hands for that extra portion of 70s chic.

The 40mm case and satin-finished bracelet are identical in construction, although the most important innovations take place away from the stainless steel components anyway.

Instead of a quartz movement (ETA F06.115), Tissot relies on its in-house Powermatic 80 caliber, which is based on the ETA classic 2824-2. Thanks to an enforced mainspring and a reduced oscillation frequency (3 instead of 4 Hz), the movement achieves an impressive power reserve of 80h. Moreover, the Powermatic 80 caliber proves to be extremely useful in everyday life, as the built-in Nivachron hairspring is able to parry the effects of magnetic fields fairly well, thus preventing rate inaccuracies.

From Sun to Waffle

Another new feature is the so-called “waffle dial” (or “raised honeycomb” in Tissot parlance), which is based on a three-dimensional, square pattern and gives the dial a perceptible visual depth. In contrast to the previous versions, the new PRX watches thus present themselves overall as significantly sportier and less elegant than the models with sunburst dials. The fact that another, far better known representative of the genre “70s sports watch” also relies on this effect – buzzword Tapisserie or Clous de Paris dial – probably goes without saying here.

Price & Availability

The Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 will be available as of June this year for an MSRP of €650 (or €690 for the bicolor variant).
