Bad guys from film and television have a special fascination. How they look has as much impact on us as how they act, but one detail of their appearance is often neglected or is completely ignored: the wristwatch. We think that every proper, self-respecting villain should have a wristwatch that captures his character. As experts in this area, we shan’t miss the opportunity to make appropriate suggestions. The following ideas are, of course, to be looked at with a certain wink and nod, and should not make wearers of the following watches doubt their own character. So here is our style advice for five selected ne’er-do-wells:
If Neo hadn’t followed the white rabbit into the depths of the matrix, he wouldn’t have had to deal with deeply humorless agent Smith and his colleagues. The somewhat brittle and bourgeois Überagent who protects and serves the matrix seems as immune to the changing tides of high fashion as he is to the joy of wearing a beautiful watch. Nevertheless, the black suits of Agent Smith, as well as his visually identical henchmen, offer a suitable point of departure to allow him to walk stylishly through the virtual world of the Matrix.
For Agent Smith, a watch should combine two things: it should match the suit, and it should be technologically advanced at the same time. We opted for a Mont Blanc Summit 2 smartwatch for a combination of precision watchmaking and advanced wearable technology (Ref.: 119438). The numerous features and apps on this watch should help Agent Smith stay one step ahead of any interloper.
But the black lord often appears rather tense, no doubt attributable to his never-ending competition with Harry Potter, so we think that a handsome chronograph could lighten his desolate mood, while at the same time adding a little zest to his desolate outfit. Still, our choice must also do justice to its role, and so the Tudor Black Bay Chrono in the limited Dark Edition seems just right (Ref.: M79230DK-0008).
There are perhaps only a few serial killers to whom the adjectives “witty” and “worldly” could be applied – especially if they tend to eat their victims – but one certainly cannot limit the character of Hannibal Lecter to his cannibalistic tendencies. The highly intelligent, highly educated psychiatrist with noble origins ultimately chooses the right wine and sides for a human roast, and is in every other way tasteful and fashion-conscious.
For the connoisseur with such a sophisticated attitude, there can actually only be one watch manufacturer: Patek Philippe. And for our dear Hannibal we choose the timeless Calatrava. With its clean, clear aesthetic and classic elegance, the Calatrava represents the inimitable Patek Philippe style like no other wristwatch, and should fit Mr. Lecter to a T – especially in rose gold with a silver-gray dial (Ref.: 5196R).
“Why so serious?” True to the motto of Batman’s extravagant opponent, the watch selection here can be a little more playful and extravagant. Still, there can only be one watch for the greasy-grimaced “fun maker.”
The Konstantin Chaykin “Joker” is, of course, the perfect watch for the Joker. The displays on the dial keep changing faces, which reflects very well the unpredictable mood swings of its wearer.
If ever a bad guy needed no introduction it is Darth Vader, perhaps the most iconic movie villain ever. He is said to have a penchant for stars – especially deadly ones. He is also known to have dedicated himself to the dark side a long time ago. We will take both of these factors into account when choosing his ideal watch.
Foto lange saxoniamondphase, Unterschrift: A. Lange & Söhne We think that Mr. Vader would be pleased with a Saxonia moon phase with a black dial by A. Lange & Söhne (Reference Rose Gold: 384.031; Reference White Gold: 384.021). The wonderful looking moon disk with its 852 stars should present perfectly under the cold glow of Darth’s deadly lightsaber.
