Zenith Chronomaster Sport in Rose Gold: Zenith’s Chronograph Hit in a Lustrous New Gold Case

Right at the beginning of this year, Zenith made big waves: With the new Chronomaster Sport series, the Le Locle-based watch manufacturer presented a sophisticated high-frequency chronograph that is capable of measuring a tenth of a second due to its high beat rate of 5 hz. (You can read the whole story here: Accurate to a tenth of a second: New Zenith Chronomaster Sport with 3600 Caliber.) Thanks to an attractive price point and very compelling design, the watch was immediately well received by watch fans and the watch press alike.

Now, some four months after its original launch, Zenith unveiled the Chronomaster Sport in rose gold, creating the perfect watch for those who want to combine the technical brilliance of its predecessor with the precious metal’s shimmering elegance and heft.

100% El Primero

The 41mm case is now available in 18-karat rose gold.

If you look at the new watch in detail, you can see (with a bit of a trained eye) that it is almost a best-of of all El Primero models to have ever existed. Many elements are borrowed from older references, which have now been skillfully reconciled in the new Chronomaster Sport models. What you will find is the philosophy of the original El Primero A386 with the shape of the Chronomaster De Luca and the high-frequency performance that the El Primero caliber has now offered for over 50 years.

In particular, the “pump pushers” – the protruding pushers on the right flank of the case – and the three-colored dial, which was originally used on the El Primero original from 1969, are two popular design elements among die-hard Zenith fans.

The ceramic bezel is particularly scratch-resistant and UV-resistant.

However, anyone who wanted to get a watch with tenths of a second measurement from Zenith had to be quick, as this complication was only available on limited edition watches (such as the El Primero Striking 10th) in the past. But this too changed with the introduction of the Zenith Chronomaster Sport.

El Primero 3600: Blazingly fast at six times the normal speed

If you operate a conventional chronograph, you can watch the second hand make one dial revolution per minute. Even though “accurate to the second” is considered praise, short time measurement is usually understood to mean something different these days, at least in the world of complicated mechanical chronographs.

Zenith’s timekeeping specialists have therefore developed the Caliber 3600, which oscillates at a frequency of 5 Hertz (or 36,000 vibrations), thus much faster than the industry standard of 4 Hz. The high frequency has a decisive advantage.

The rotor of the column-wheel chronograph is adorned with the Zenith star.

If you press the pusher at 3 o’clock, you’re in for a real treat: In just 10 seconds, the chronograph’s second hand races across the dial, at a pace that is six times faster than most chronographs.

The secret of the high-speed second hand lies in the movement’s frequency of 10 beats per second. As a result, the second hand makes 100 tiny, imperceptible steps within 10 seconds on its sprint, allowing tenths of a second to be read off the 100 marks along the ceramic bezel.

The date aperture is placed at 4:30.
