The Pelagos – Tudor’s Titan
Tudor watches have always been known as a less expensive alternative to the prized models of Rolex. The original idea was to use Rolex parts and equip them with cheaper but high quality series-produced calibers of Swiss production such as ETA. This would afford the customer a reasonable, and attractive alternative to Rolex in an almost identical design. In the mid-1990s, Tudor dared their way into independence with varied collections. The presentation of the Heritage Collection at Baselworld 2012 marked their big break through. Tudor launched the Pelagos (REF. 25500TN) as another exiting diver’s watch, alongside their already very popular Black Bay. Today, the name is often uttered in the same breath as her famous sister, the Rolex Sea Dweller.
Pelagos, as well as Black Bay appeals to a younger, more progressive audience than that of the parent company Rolex. Until 2015 Tudor continued to use calibers made by ETA. The current Pelagos (REF. M25600TN) is fitted with a COSC certified calibre as are other models by Tudor. Although Tudor has evolved away from Rolex in design and in terms of image the brand presents more than ever as a direct alternative to the brand with the Crown. Tudor stands for best possible quality at a fair price.
A diving watch in every respect
The Pelagos was Tudor’s and Rolex’s first watch made from titanium. The housing is waterproof to a depth of 500 meters and boasts a 42 mm satin finish housing and matching band. The sophisticated finish lends the timepiece the impressive appearance and unique warm tone that onlyt titanium can provide. Like the Rolex Sea Dweller, the watch has a valve at the nine o’clock position to allow helium to escape from the housing during decompression. This functionality prevents the buildup of excess pressure that occurs during the decompression phase in the watch. A solid Sapphire Crystal protects the against intrusion of water as pressure builds at great depths. Pelagos is a tool watch through and through.
The tool-watch nature is also evident on the dial in the effective luminosity of the major indices. A feature that ensures excellent legibility of the watch under water. The bezel made of titanium has a 60-minute graduation. Phosphorescing digits on the ceramic background allow for perfect reading in low light. A special feature, which Tudor and Rolex offer exclusively in the Pelagos. Telltale characteristics for Tudor diver watches are the so-called snowflake hands, that are present in models as far back as 1950 and 1960.
In addition to the popular black version Tudor offers the Pelagos also in blue (REF. M25600TB) and as a left handed watch (REF. M25610NL) at.
Thoughtful detail – folding clasp with spring loaded micro adjustment
A really special feature is the fine adjustment of the stainless-steel clasp of the superbly crafted bracelet made of titanium. A unique system patented by Tudor allows the wearer to adjust the strap by means of a spring mechanism. The strap adjusts automatically and continuously to the wrist by compensating for circumference differences of up to 10 mm. In addition to the automatic spring mechanism adjustment Tudor has equipped the clasp with a diving extension, that extends the band up to 20 mm, so nothing stands in the way for your dive in the wetsuit. The finish of the steel clasp is designed to render difference to the titanium bracelet practically invisible.
Tudor caliber MT5612
Since 2015, Tudor uses the COSC certified caliber MT5612. This movement is officially certified by the Swiss Testing Institute “Contrôle officiel Suisse des Chronomètres” (COSC). The automatic movement with stop seconds, silicon spring and a date display at three o’clock is wound with a bidirectional rotor system. The 26 stone-bearing caliber operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations and offers the stunning power reserve of approximately 70 hours.
The diver’s watch for all occasions
With the Pelagos, Tudor has developed a traditional, mechanical divers watch, which is virtually unrivalled in the sum of all its properties. The titan, the manufactured caliber, the sophisticated buckle and the luminescent bezel make the Pelagos a real tool watch with distinctive design.
