The full spectrum of flamboyance: three rainbow watches for your attention

We often get calls from prospective customers who would like to buy an expensive watch without wanting to attract too much attention. For them, the focus is more on craftsmanship and elegant understatement, and less on the luxury lifestyle associated with expensive watches.

Others, however, prefer a timepiece at the other end of the spectrum: diamond-studded “rainbow watches” that shine brighter than the north star when light hits them. To celebrate the beginning of the carnival season, we’ve reached deep into the confetti sack and pulled out three colorful specimens, guaranteed to attract maximum attention to anyone brave enough to wear them.

1. The obvious: Rolex Daytona Rainbow Everose Gold (Ref. 116595 RBOW)

When thinking about “rainbow watches,” most minds will automatically go to this particular Rolex Daytona. It not only bears its special selling proposition in the name (not to mention the reference number), but is also the prototypical representative of its genre. Presented at Baselworld 2018, this watch is set with a total of over 100 diamonds on the bezel, dial and lugs, and sparkles like the storied Rainbow Fish. The price of the watch is a flashy 92,400 Swiss francs, and is nonetheless in such high demand that prospects of finding one at an official Rolex dealer are dim at best.

2. The extrovert: Hublot Big Bang Unico Rainbow King Gold (Ref. 411.OX.9910.LR.0999)

The next watch, from Hublot, is – if possible – even more extravagant, since here the rainbow treatment is given to the entire watch, leather strap and all. In addition, the number of diamonds is also more than doubled compared to to the Rolex Daytona – here well over 200! Whoever wants to own this particular bird of paradise must come up with 90,300 Euros, but for that you also get a chronograph function, allowing you to time just how long it takes for people to respond to the Rainbow King’s resplendence. Practical as well as outrageous.

3. The reserved one: Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950 Tourbillon (Ref. PFH279-1062500-HA3221)

A restrained rainbow watch is, of course, a contradiction in terms, but in contrast to the two previous examples the Parmigiani Fleurier is a bit more laid back. Well, maybe not the bright red leather strap or the tourbillon –the craven attention-grabber of mechanical components, but the deep blue dial could almost be called conservative. And when it comes to diamonds, Parmigiani limits itself to the bezel, which is set with a mere 40 diamonds of various colors. The whole thing comes in at a conservative 155,000 Swiss francs.
