The Schaffhausen watch manufacturer H. Moser & Cie, founded in 1828 and today under the management of CEO Edouard Meylan and the Meylan family, has over the years gained a reputation of an “enfant terrible” in the Swiss watch industry. This is mainly because of the company’s daring designs, which hold a mirror up to the industry, deliberately provoke, or are just completely bizarre. We take a look at the TOP 5 craziest watches from H. Moser & Cie:
The watches in the Swiss Alp Watch collection are reminiscent of the smartwatch designs of a Cupertino tech company, but with one significant difference: they are 100% mechanical. With the entirely Swiss made movement Caliber HMC 324, which has a remarkable 100-hour power reserve, you can wear a watch on your wrist that is suitable for everyday use, but with real “wolf in sheep’s clothing” qualities.
The futuristic Vantablack® used in some of Moser’s watches is considered the “blackest black in the world.” If a photon hits it, the material absorbs 99.965% of the light. Since almost no light is reflected back, the viewer gets the impression of a black hole. This innovative technology, together with a flying minute tourbillon, finds its place in the beautiful Ref. 1804-0212. Price: CHF 75,000.00.
A watch adorned with flowers? At H. Moser & Cie certainly.
The “Nature Watch” by Moser is, as the name suggests, a call for more ecological sustainability and a statement against excessive consumer behavior. The 42mm watch, which is not for sale, is a one-of-a-kind piece, set with living plants native to Switzerland. “Make Swiss Made Great Again” becomes “Make Swiss Made Green Again”.
What was understood at first glance to be a spoof of the Swiss watch industry actually had a completely different intention. But let’s start at the beginning: The Swiss Icons Watch by H. Moser & Cie unambiguously combines some of the best-known design features of leading Swiss watch brands, such as the iconic “Pepsi bezel,” the Cartier cabochon on the crown and the blued Breguet hands.
To the delight (or resentment?) of many watch fans, the polarizing watch was seen as a new provocation, but that’s not at all what it was meant to be. Just one day after announcing the new watch Meylan backpedaled, explaining that it is only meant to pay tribute to “the great founders of [the] beautiful industry,” and also to warn “against certain practices of others.” Intentionally or not, the result is certainly funny.
The current legal requirements for obtaining the once so renowned “Swiss Made” label are too lax, if only 60% of the components have to be of Swiss origin. At least that’s what the Moser team thought when it launched the “Swiss Mad Watch” in early 2017. The highlight of the bizarre watch is that 100% of its components come from Switzerland, which hardly ever happens these days. To achieve this, the Schaffhausen manufacturer had to get creative: For example, the case is Swiss cheese – a Vacherin Mont-d’Or to be precise – which has been hardened using a special technical process called itr2©.
H. Moser & Cie is thus not just concerned with the preservation of nature and prudent consumer behavior, but also the maintenance and “non-dilution” of a quality standard.
Chapeau!
