The name is Seamaster, Omega Seamaster Diver, the go-to watch for James Bond. Despite the watch’s close association with 007, there is so much more to the story of the Omega Seamaster Diver. Prior to stealing the silver screen with Bond, the Seamaster Diver watch was first conceived at the Omega Manufacture with a water resistance measured at 200M back in 1988.
Officially known as the Omega Seamaster 200, the watch then only garnered lukewarm reception in the watch community and had not really captured the public attention like its better-known successor – the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M. The contemporary rendition of the watch is upgraded with a Co-Axial movement and 300M water resistance.
Overshadowed by the success of the Seamaster Diver 300M, the production of the Omega Seamaster 200M has been officially ceased since 1995 and to this day, the Seamaster 200M is more commonly known by the nickname of “Seamaster Pre-Bond”. It wasn’t until recently, the watch community rediscovered the Seamaster 200M and the interests for this Pre-Bond series have generated more buzz.
So, how does the Seamaster 200M fare when we put it side by side with its modern counterpart, the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M? Join Peter Bodenbenner (Montredo) and Herr Strohm (Bernhard Strohm, author, watch blogger) in conversation in the current episode of “Old Vs. New”, as we bring the Seamaster Diver 300M and Pre-Bond series into the spotlight and discover how this iconic timepiece has evolved over the years.
