MAEN’s passion for quality and detail brings a newcomer to the world of automatic watches: the Greenwich 38 Automatic GMT.
Although MAEN is a Swedish brand based in Stockholm, it was founded by two Dutchmen. This is evident from the fact that the company’s name is derived from Old Dutch and means “moon”. This choice is a tribute to the ship “Halve Maen” (Half Moon), with which the explorer Henry Hudson discovered the American east coast in 1609. The founders have always been fascinated by the history of New York and the influence of their ancestors on American culture. Many well-known places in the Big Apple have names of Dutch origin. Because of this fascination and the connection between New York and Dutch tradition, MAEN decided to name each collection after neighbourhoods and landmarks in the Big City.
In the beginning, the company produced quartz watches with the Manhattan 40 and Brooklyn 39 collections. The huge success of these models then prompted them to move towards automatic models with the creation of the Skymaster 38 MKII and Hudson 38 MK4 lines. Of course, a watch company’s thirst for innovation is hard to quench, and MAEN recently launched the Greenwich 38 GMT automatic watch. Following collections of automatic diving watches, chronographs with aviation motifs, and quartz watches, the Greenwich seems to round out MAEN’s offering and fill the niche of an outdoor or adventure watch.
Like the other MAEN watches, the Greenwich 38 GMT is Swiss Made certified and assembled in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Inside it beats “an automatic heart” made from the SwissTech S24-045 movement. In operation, the SwissTech movement works excellently. The winding is smooth, the crown runs smoothly and the movement offers a 40-hour power reserve. As for the design of the watch, the Scandinavian influence is quite obvious. Both the case and the structure of the bracelet feature simple and sleek lines.
MAEN has managed to create a watch that is suitable for many different situations. The brand offers three different dials for the Greenwich 38 GMT: two black ceramic dials that differ in the colour of the luminous material (classic white or bright red), or a blue tapisserié dial that is very appealing. The timepiece comes standard with a “tropic” strap made of rubber. As well as being beautifully designed, the Greenwich features a 38mm steel case that is water resistant to 100m with sharp contrasting surfaces and a double domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. Still looking for the “aha” effect? Here it is: the Greenwich GMT features a 24H h GMT scale behind the hour indicators, allowing you to keep track of a second time zone. This feature can be very useful for those who travel regularly and/or are in contact with people in another time zone. The GMT hand can be easily adjusted via the 2nd position of the crown.
Also, from January 1st 2022, all MAEN GMT models will come with an integrated rubber strap as standard!
